As of June 1, 2015, Chemical Manufacturers are required to comply with the new Global Harmonized system standards which includes replacing Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) with new universal Safety Data sheets (SDS) format and product labeling requirements.
The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200(g)), requires that the chemical manufacturer, distributor, or importer provide SDSs for each hazardous chemical to downstream users to communicate information on these hazards. SDSs provide more detailed hazard information about the product than the label. They are an important resource for workplaces and workers so that they can identify the hazards of the products they use and to protect yourself from those hazards, including safe handling and emergency measures.
All SDS sheets provided by Henry Schein Animal Health (HSAH) are in the correct format and are suitable for use. Although, some sheets may still read MSDS, it is important to communicate to the customer that the 16 Section format is the most important feature.
How can practices obtain SDS for HSAH products?
There are three ways that practices can obtain SDS information and are summarized below:
- At the time of order, if there is a SDS required, there will be a link icon next to the item that will allow customers to immediately download and/or print the SDS. A screen shot/example is provided below for your convenience.
The second way for practices to access all SDS related products is through the new “My Purchase History Tab” located on www.henryscheinvet.com after the practice logs into their account. After the practice clicks on the “My Purchase History Tab” a list of all items ordered will appear and if an SDS is required for that product an exclamation diamond pictogram located next to the item description will be noted. A screen shot/example is provided below for your convenience.
- The third and final way for practices to obtain copies of SDS is located on the www.henryscheinvet.com on the homepage. The SDS button on the home page will give customers access to the entire list of products that require SDS.
At this time HSAH does not have SDS for exempt items such as Pills, Tablets, and Capsules. Our focus has and will continue to be directed towards obtaining SDS for hazardous items that are not on the exemption list. If customers would like to obtain SDS for such exempted items they should be instructed to contact the manufacturer of the product directly.
As always if you have any questions about SDS do not hesitate to contact your HSAH RA department at SafetydatasheetsSDS@henryscheinvet.com
